Interview

SUNIL
A Rag-picker since the age of 18 in Delhi Lives in a rented kacha house helped me understand the step 2 (Collection).

He is married and a father of two boys, his wife works as house help.

He told us that he collects the garbage from door to door in this area and takes it to the
nearby community garbage bin where he does basic separation.

He mentioned that wet and dry waste is collected together and it becomes very dirty and difficult for him to segregate as he is not provided with any equipments like masks, gloves etc.

Step 4 - Dumping

The community garbage bin from where the garbage goes to the landfill seemed cleaner, on enquiring i got to know that the gabage was just sent out to the landfill after being compressed.

What do people think about waste segregation?

Artboard 56 copy 7_4x.png

Pain points concluded

1. No segregation at household level

2. Casual segregation by the garbage collector

3. Garbage being thrown in plastic bags

4. Lack of motivation and unawareness about garbage segregation

5. No tracking system for household’s segregation

Proposed idea

RFID scans outside each house for tracking waste segregation in an app

Using the RFID to track waste management.

How?

An app will be downloaded by the house owner and the garbage collector. When the collector reaches the door step to collect the waste, he will update in the app if the waste is segregated or not.

The number of days the waste is segregated, the house owner has to pay half the fee for waste collector. The incentive culture will motivate the house owner to segregate the waste.
